The Harlan County School District has been approved for a rare $1.2 million federal grant to expand guidance counselor services in eight elementary schools.
“This doesn’t help us financially as a district, but it does help with improving school services,” he said, as it will pay for one-half of a day for a counselor to be at the eight elementary schools in the district.
During a discussion about district employment, Howard told the board that 25 additional certified staff had been hired, along with eight classified staff, since the last board meeting. This addition to teaching-level positions was due to retirements and disability determinations made final over the last few months.
“The sad part,” Howard said, is that 14 people have not been hired back yet, 13 of whom are teachers.
