I believe that if Trump didn’t say the exact words reported in the Press, he certainly referenced Haiti, El Salvador and possibly Nigeria as a ‘shithole’ countries, as the bipartisan agreement worked out between Grassley & Durbin included immigrants from those countries already here, for green card eligibility. A part of the 50,000 diversity lottery that would end, if the deal was accepted.
Trump could have included all of Africa. After all Sarah Palin, while running for V.P., called Africa a country not a continent.
I believe this was leaked for two reasons. The weaker Congressional Republicans (not including all, but a few of the leaders) don’t want immigration reformed. If that happens it takes away a major issue the Party has been running with for decades.
The other reason has to do with the recent Quinnipac & Pew polls, showing Trumps base is shrinking. These polls show he’s lost confidence of at at least 15% of his base. It’s no secret Trump cant get his popularity above 40%, even with passing major tax reform. Reform the Republican Party claims will help the countries middle & working class.
Add to this both Republicans and Democrats that do understand the Tax Reform legislation, know that at best, it’s a short term economic stimulation package, with long term consequences for the middle and working class. That’s why you see more than usual Republican House & Senate dropping, not running for another term.
The tactics Trump used to win, cannot be the tactics that will keep Republicans in the majority. At this juncture he’s much more a liability than an asset. If you believe this is baseless opinion, you only have to look at the Special Election results since Trump took office. Those Trump backed lost in States where he had won by more than at least 12% point.
