Well I do agree to an extent. We may never get any type of big stores here to help this place out but at least I know that I tried to do something about it.

Before any meaningful economy can be rebuilt for SE Ky, the issue of transportation networks, both highways and communication must be resolved. At the moment Ky is a State that imposes few restrictions on City's building their own Internet Enterprise. If any City in Harlan County were to invest in fast speed broadband internet, you would see viable private enterprise seeking out expansion there. Then pressure for viable highway infrastructure. First the horse, then the cart.

I totally agree, Cate. With so many communities/areas competing for Federal and State funding, you have to give them no other choice but to have to upgrade roads and infrastructure. They look at it like this: It's cheaper for them to pay us to relocate to areas that have nice roads and jobs than it is to gamble billions on building a road that may or may not bring prosperity to the area. As long as it is viewed as a "gamble" they're going to invest that money in the more prosperous areas every time. An idea I had was to try to attract the film industry to Harlan. I'm not talking about Indie films or low budgets...I mean the multi-million dollar blockbusters. Harlan has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country and we can't even get a show about our own home town to film here? Now that's just crazy. We should have people contacting these production companies on a daily basis, offering our county to them. When they come, they bring hundreds of people with them, which would infuse a lot of money into our local economy (as much, if not more than Adventure Tourism). They rent set locations, hire contractors to help build out the sets, hire extras...the list of ways they would help our county is huge!! I'm not saying that is THE ANSWER for Harlan County, but any feasible way to create jobs and infuse some cash into the local economy is a plus to me. And that wouldn't cost us a dime ;) ;) .

I recently listened to an NBR podcast interview with Chris Offcutt, the son of a man from the hills of Ky, where Chris and his family lived. Chris' father made aa very good living secretly writing Porn books under 17 pen names. Most were written penned under name of John Cleve. Chris has written a book "My Fatjer, The Pornagrapher", a new release.

Sorry about the typo. Obviously I haven't acted on your suggestion to proof my post before posting. It should be NPR. National Public Radio.

I would expect that you would view NPR as a source of indoctrination. In the same way the liberal left views Fox News, a source of indoctrination. Both are targets of opposite extremist attacks. Both news sources use words in interviews and commentaries that can be deemed to carry a bias. The difference in the two is NPR has an ongoing internal monitoring audit established. One that exams every broadcast for the purpose of ferreting out those and minimizing bias'. Fox News does not.
